Volodymyr Pavensky's Woodwind Quintet, op. 23 [Digital Download]
Written in the turbulent months following Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union, Volodymyr Pavensky’s 1992 Woodwind Quintet, op. 23 mirrors the social tension of the era, at times literally diverging into multiple keys at once. The work appears dense and nearly impenetrable at first glance, but a strong woodwind quintet will find fascinating emergent properties within its interwoven layers, including moments of levity and humour.
Pavensky has been a member of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine since 1994. In this work he demonstrates his eclectic voice, sharply juxtaposing elements of neo-classicism and polytonality.
Volodymyr Pavensky’s Woodwind Quintet, op. 23 is part of ép’s Slava Ukraini series, and revenues from the sales of this title go directly to the composer.
