Zhylinskyi became an Honoured Artist of Ukraine in 1995 and has received many awards from the Ministries of Culture of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. He was best known for his art songs based on Ukrainian poems – he wrote over 200 of them – but he was also an experienced writer of instrumental music.
In this short-but-sweet 5 ½ minute concert piece for bassoon and piano, he demonstrates his mastery of musical contrast. Written in the wake of Ukraine being rocked by the infamous Chernobyl disaster, this piece conveys a palpable sense of turmoil and unease, even during its more subdued moments.
Oleksandr Zhylinskyi’s “Fagotina” for bassoon and piano is part of ép’s Slava Ukraini series, and revenues from the sales of this title go directly to the composer’s family.
Duration: 5 ½ min. (approx.)
