A member of the renowned National Union of Composers of Ukraine, Renata Sokachyk’s challenging yet disarming musical voice shines through in these three short movements for solo bassoon and piano. The Three Pieces in F are not conventionally tonal (hence the omission of “major” or “minor” in the title) but rather pivot around the pitch F, constantly departing in new directions before inevitably returning.

To the uninitiated, Ukrainian modernism can seem opaque, which is why we have taken great pains in this edition to make it as accessible as possible. Sokachyk herself consulted with bassoonist and Ukrainian music scholar Zachary Senick (Захар Сенюк) on many aspects of the piece, from the multiphonics (which are clearly labelled with fingering diagrams) to the rhythmic structure of the piece. We have also made many clarifications to the meter to ensure this edition is easily legible, even with the highly creative time signatures in the third movement (19/16, anyone?)

If you’re a bassoonist looking for a new rhythmic challenge, the Three Pieces in F are a fantastic place to start!

Renata Sokachyk’s Three Pieces in F for bassoon and piano is part of ép’s Slava Ukraini series, and revenues from the sales of this title go directly to the composer.
