Written in 2024 for our Slava Ukraini editor Zachary Senick, Volodymyr Chernenko’s Ballada Ukrainian Pattern adds a bouncy, delightful and accessible gem to the bassoon’s chamber music repertoire. Taking the form of a rondo, the “A” section has the energy of a Hopak dance, exploring the bassoon’s low register in a playful way, while the “B” section contrasts with a nostalgic ballad that blends seamlessly back into the Hopak theme. Meanwhile, the piano accompaniment adds a mischievous quality to the whole mix. At only 2 ½ minutes it can serve many programming purposes, from a punchy concert opener to the final encore.

Volodymyr Chernenko is a professor at the Kharkiv National University of Arts, and alongside his prolific compositional career, he is a distinguished academic, having co-authored textbooks on philosophy, cultural studies, and logic.

Volodymyr Chernenko’s Ballada Ukrainian Pattern for bassoon and piano is part of ép’s Slava Ukraini series, and revenues from the sales of this title go directly to the composer.
